A Prediction Market Trader Earned $Nearly Half a Million on Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.
An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was made public, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.
Sudden Shift in Forecasts
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the period preceding Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been apprehended.
One account, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
But the odds had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.
A handful of other individuals also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.
Political Attention Grows
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule put forward on recently seeks to ban government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
Industry Context
Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.
This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
