Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of his move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
